Several members of our steering team have been reading The Canadian Story of the CRC by Ty Hofman. In 1912, one of the earliest CRC’s in Edmonton asked US Classis Pacific if they could have “Canada” included in their name. Their request was denied. As Hofman writes “So a bit of ecclesiastical nationalism was gently shunted to the side.” Talking about Canada’s unique identity in the CRC is nothing new. We’ve been having versions of this conversation for more than 100 years!
You can find out more about the various ways in which the CRC in Canada has uniquely served God in this Canadian landscape by reading Ty Hofman's The Canadian Story of the CRC, which, though out of print, can still be purchased used...or check with your pastor! Perhaps they have a copy you could borrow. In the meantime, please know that the CRC in Canada has fostered unique ministries with Canadian Indigenous peoples, political and social justice movements, chaplaincy and more!
